Dr. S. Raghuraman-Pulavar, M.A., M.Phil., M.Ed., Ph.D., is a renowned scholar and artist in the field of Tamil literature and Bharatanatyam. He served as an Associate Professor in Tamil at A.M. Jain College, Chennai, and was a visiting faculty member at Kalakshetra, Chennai, for over 18 years. A distinguished research guide for Bharatanatyam at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, he has mentored 22 Ph.D. scholars to date. Currently, he is a visiting professor and academic council member at the Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University, Chennai, and also serves as a Ph.D. guide for Vedic Wellness University, Florida, USA.
He has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Bhaskara Puraskaar Award as “Ilakkiya Bhaaskara,” the title Senthamizh Chemmal from Thirukkural Aayvu Maiyyam, and a National Award for Scriptwriting in Theatre Drama for Andhi Veli. His contributions to literature include notable books such as Tamizhar Natana Varalaaru and Natana Kalaichol Kalanjiyam. A prolific speaker and researcher, he has delivered numerous lecture-demonstrations on topics such as dance and rasa, the Ashta Nayakis of the Sangam age (for the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi), sensualities and mother goddess worship (for Kartik Fine Arts’ Natya Darshan, 2007 & 2008), and Tholkappiyam Meypaatiyal at the Semmozhi National Conference.
Dr. Raghuraman has produced over 400 dance dramas, of which 360 scripts were authored by him. His outstanding contribution to the art of dance and lyrical excellence has been honored with several awards, including the Sailasudha Award (2010), Dr. S. Ramanathan Memorial Award (Cleveland, USA, 2017), Special Award for Service in Bharatanatyam by Narada Gana Sabha (2019), and the Best Reviewer Award by TAG Centre (2019).
